In my experience, the secret to applying texture using Trap Texture is to start with ZERO texture using the "Texture Amount" parameter and then to slowly increase the texture level. Texture application should not have much effect on the shape unless too much texture is applied. That amount varies with the shape and with the texture. Furthermore, although any trap shape can be used as a texture, some of them do a very poor job. Look for trap shapes that have "texture" in their name as a starting point. One further problem with textures is that many of the formula writers, while intending to create a texture, did not include a size parameter, and so Trap Position within a TrapShape Block is needed to resize the texture. Many of the texture trap shapes have the default size set too large, and so without something like Trap Position to resize the texture it can do disastrous things to the shape. Here are some short tutorial examples. The first one uses Marble Texture by itself in the Trap texture position, and you really don't see much texture application until the value of Texture amount is near 0.4. With this amount of texture the shape is badly distorted. In the second upr TrapShape Block is used in the Trap Texture position. Notice that within Trap Position the size is set to 0.03, and for the texture amount, it is now only 0.03. This produces virtually no distortion of the trap shape, and produces a nice texture.

A texture amount of 0.25 seriously distorts the trap shape. This can be seen from both shape and color changes. One of the rules for Challenge #4 is to produce minimal change to the main fractal shape on application of the texture. Although you can see some texture with texture amount = 0.25 and size = 1, there are some serious distortion problems. These show up as shape changes on the shape layer and color shifts on the color layer. I have attached a upr that has 4 panels to illustrate the problem and solution.
1. The upper left panel is the image with no texture applied. This is our standard for both shape and color.
2. The upper right panel shows the image with texture amount = 0.25 and size = 1. Notice the shape and color distortions. Its almost as if the trap threshold has been decreased. For more complex shapes than Point, the changes may be considerable more dramatic. There is also the appearance of hard edges where there were none before.
3. The lower left panel has the texture amount adjusted so that there are minimal effects on shape and color. Virtually all the texture is gone now. Compare this with the upper left panel and you should see the shape and coloring are almost identical. This is not because the texture amount is too small, but because the texture size is too small.
4. The lower right panel has texture amount = 0.025 and size = 20. You should be able to see the following: (a) other than the swirling texture effects, the color and shape are virtually identical to the upper left panel, and (b) the texture is considerable more visible and more evenly distributed than in the upper right panel.
Good artistic presentation means being into the details, and that is hopefully what these challenges will help everyone achieve. And of course, art is very much a matter of perception and taste. To my eye there is a large difference between the upper and lower right panels. That may not be true for everyone, but hopefully the four panels help illustrate the principles I was trying to present.
