   Orbit Traps Overview

First, Starting with Orbit Traps as the framework we have the following PlugIns:

Trap Iteration. The default is Trap Select, and this is where limited iterations are controlled. There are three other PlugIns for this slot which provide for a random sequence of iterations. Limited iterations is definitely challenge material.

Trap Position. The default is Trap Position. This is the slot for transforms, and was the subject of Challenge #3. There is some advanced stuff that can be done here.

Trap Shape. The default is Astroid. This is the core PlugIn slot for Orbit Traps and was the subject of Challenges #1 and #2. There is a lot of advanced stuff that can be done here.

Trap Transfer. The default is Trap Transfer. We have done nothing here. The available PlugIns modify the trap distance. There aren't very many of them, and there probably isn't enough "meat" to be the core of a challenge.

Trap Mode. The default is Closest. This is a core companion to Trap Shape, and determines what trap shape distance characteristics put a point in the trap or out of the trap. There is a lot of interesting material here, but nothing really different from UF4 and the various UF4 style trap formulas, including the older version of Orbit Traps. I don't think there is enough here to constitute a challenge in its own right, but certainly could be part of a challenge.

Trap Texture. The default is Flat Texture. This was the subject of all three challenges. It is, in my opinion, the most difficult application of trap shapes, expecially when all the wrappers are included. There is material for more than one additional challenge here.

Trap Color Mode. The default is Distance. This is the PlugIn that determines the actual color mapping, which is the essence of our art. There are some enhancements from UF4, but the principles are basically the same. I want to concentrate on learning the really new material in UF5, so I don't see this as constituting a challenge in its own right.

Orbit Traps Gradient (UF5) Sine Demo

I thought I'd try to restrain myself from posting too much at once, but it's just so exciting, so one more UPR for tonight.

This one uses Orbit Traps Gradient (UF5) in dmj5.ucl. This is a bit more powerful than the Orbit Traps class in Standard.ulb (which you would load into *Generic Coloring (Gradient) in Standard.ucl). For one thing it includes texturing options.

Tweaking suggestions: Delete the top two layers and hit the Browse button for the Trap Shape parameter on the Outside Tab (it reads "Sine" to start with). You'll be taken to mt.ulb where there are quite a few trap shapes to try out - or browse to reb.ulb, dmj5.ulb or Standard.ulb.

One thing to note: when you look at the trap shapes in mt.ulb (and I think reb.ulb) you'll see several that end in the word "Texture". This means that they are primarily intended to be loaded into the Texture slot. You can load then into the Trap Shape slot, but they might not give very good results.
