Here are the UF5 image requirements:
Ultra Fractal imports JPEG, PNG, and BMP images. Only 24-bit or 32-bit BMP images are supported. Interlaced PNG files are not supported. The alpha channel from PNG files or 32-bit BMP files will be treated as transparency information for the image.
There is nothing about size. I suspect the problem is that your PNG files that don't open are in an interlaced format, which isn't supported.
I just tested it here - UF will not import either 256 greyscale png or 256 colour png so such images need to be converted to full 24 or 32 bit pngs.
