Geometric eg Barnsley Image

Hi Juliette,

"Hi All, I have a question. At renderosity I see sometimes a special kind of UF-fractals, for example these 3 ( created by : Mountmous, Carlx and Joefrac) I would like to give this style a try but I don't have a clue on how to achieve this kind of style. Can anyone point me in the good direction please ? preferably an .upr , so I can study it ?"

Cool question. To me there is both artistic and technique parts to this question. I've looked at abstract art (not just fractal art) with similar feel to these images. I think of them as 'order and chaos' images. There are many elements to images including shape, weight, color, texture, and placement. For me, an image of this type works when some of these elements are allow to go random, but others are preserved. It is interesting to examine these three images and see what elements provide chaos and what provide order.

As for how, there are many ways to achieve these effects in UF. I suspect that these three images were 'found' rather than 'constructed.' That is the artists started in a particular 'place' and tweaked their way along feeling the art emerge to the final image. Below is a quick UPR based on Yvonne's image. It is not near as nice, but it is only four layers and five minutes of work.

Hi Juliette,

Since I'm one of the creators you mentioned it's obvious I should also give some answer. I already mentioned the formula which started my image on Renderosity. But any Barnsley formula will do. At the moment I'm using the Barnsley formulas of Ed Algra in ea.ufm. I find it's totally different to create an image with these formulas. For example, a Julia-formula I would combine more easily with Doodads or Harlequin or some other formula that makes shapes themselves. With Barnsley formulas there already is a shape, and you have to find formulas that contribute to that shape rather than make shapes themselves. I always start with Basic which is also easy to use as a Mask for other layers. Binary Decomposition is also a nice one to have for Masking. Furthermore I use colouring formulas that have a "line"-shape. Like Range Lite in lkm.ucl and Waves in dan.ucl. Portions in mt.ucl is also a regular guest in my Barnsleys. And then it's often a way of further texturing.

Normally I would not share parameters of my finished images but in this case I'll make an exception. Just to show you how I made this one. No tweaks please!

Good luck!

Yvonne

Hello all,

Liked the images at Renderosity so I thought I'd try a Barnsley image myself. I went for a somewhat more organic effect, where the geometric base has been softened a little by the coloring algorithms.

Feel free to tweak if you'd like.

Morgen

Try this: Fractal-gami not quite the same structure, but similar to the first link.

formula: kpk Wiggbarn in kpk.ufm outside coloring: akl.ucl "Medial section"

params to get you started: (I'd like to see what people can do with this!) Paul

Thanks, y'all - glad you like my "fractstract". They don't get noticed as much as 'real' fractals but I love this style of art so that's what I've been gravitating towards.

I reckon this upr is a good bit more than I was able to throw together quickly yesterday at work for the guy that asked - hope he's on the list. Lots of ideas here if anybody wants to poke around. Didn't have the gumption to spend half a week figuring masks for ALL of the shapes but you'll get the idea. Lots of masking, dragging, and zooming.

Iteration coloring and a gradient with like 6-10 color bars helps to isolate shapes into unique colors that you can then mask in or out. Takes a TON of layers and a whole lot of disciplined labelling of all the different location shape layers and their masks because these images can get to be a really tall stack in the Frac Prop window and you can spend 15 minutes trying to find something if you don't and get lost. And you have to always be thinking of light direction. Gets a little hairy once you get a lot of layers with wild merge modes to get the darks and lights on the right sides of the shapes but, in a pinch, just drag the mess up the stack until it works....and then add more masks of the shapes you just covered p -aaaarrrgh! lol

Just IFS Barneyjock III and the "old" Doodads on this upr. The newer versions should be the same - I just snagged an old layer from my layer library to tweak and that's what I was using back when I started with this formula so that's what there is. Lots of other ucl's can be substituted.

Anyhow, tweaks are cool - you guys can probably improve a good bit on this quasi-quickie. Hope this helps some to get going with this tough but rewarding formula. c-ya! Rick
