About

I've been using UltraFractal for a fair while, since pre v3. I have had it rendering 24/7 for the last 5 years or so.

Formula Authoring

I have hardly done anything with formula writing, just a couple of mods.. I am always hoping to get more into that.

Programming

I'm a coder (java, c++, python, shell scripting, shader-language, maya mel, houdini hscript, etc) and image synthesis is both a hobby and a profession for me.

Work

I work at a VFX company called 'Rising Sun Pictures' as a 'Technical Director' and have done work on several films whilst employed there, it is a fantastic place to work with some really clever and inspiring people.

Wiki

I totally love editing wikis, I was so incredibly glad when the UF wiki started and that it was even a mediawiki, which meant I could get started really fast. We've got a choice wiki at work, full of VFX know-how and documentation, and lols of course :D

I love to gnome away at wikis, improving, reorganizing, fixing, clarifying, formatting and generally improving articles if I can see that anything needs improving.

I started this little HowTo article for the UF Wiki to cover the basics of editing mediaWiki.

Demoscene

I also love demos and the demoscene (pouet.net is a great place to find demos)

  • Nova fractal
I added the Wikipedia article on Nova Fractal, it's been trimmed down a lot by now though, so I will move what I originally added there to this wiki instead.
  • Animation
Although almost all of my work is still image, I have recently began rendering animations using my upr-modifying code (which is called uprMash)
  • Detail
I like a lot of detail in my fractals, especially when an entire frame is filled with it. Perhaps this is a peculiar bent of mine, but there you go :).
  • Antialiasing
It is very important to me to make the most of the pixels available to record an impression of an infinitely detailed figure.
  • Negative Exponent Mandelbrot
What happens when you use a negative power (aka exponent) on the mandelbrot fractal formula? Some very interesting things, particularly inside the lake. I call this negmandel.
  • Kerry Mitchell's Mandelbrot
The genius of Kerry Mitchell has given us this fascinating tweak to the standard Mandelbrot and Julia formulas, which I have long loved to explore.
  • Mandelbrot Interpolations
rendered stack-maps for example are some 20 brot-layers, with power settings varying across one-on-z (1/z) to positive values.
  • Icons
A gorgeous fractal variant which is a higher-dimensional, and tweakable relative of the good old, 2D logistic plot or Bifurcation Diagram of period-doubling oscillations, which lead up to (and beyond) pure "chaos" after the parameter value passes 3.0. changes from chaos theory. The rendering is a full-frame array so it can be tricky to do zoom-ins or super high resolution renders. But I love it, it's like a spirograph oN aCId, as it were ;)
  • Buddhabrot
An alternate way to render the classic mandelbrot fractal, leads to a very pleasant, soft looking, attractor-type rendering.
