Cutting a shape out of a fractal layer.

A common way of cutting out a geometric shape is using a Transformation, see the discussions below.

The layer used for the masks is Rocks, so I guess the problem could be viewed as how to make the transparent rocks in an area opaque which would then effectively remove them from the mask. I'm interested in a general solution to the problem if there is one (or more).

Hi Don!

For each set of stones, you need to do two things:

1) Block out the group on your original Rocks layer. I did this by adding a layer above it that uses a Point trap (Orbit Traps) to create a round white shape and Normal merge mode.

2) For each rock mask layer, clip out that area. I used Deluxe Clipping.

I did these quickly and the shapes may not be entirely precise, but it will give you the idea.

Ignore any warnings of missing parameters from my beta version of OT (UF3).

"How can an area be removed from a mask?"

There are multiple ways to solve this problem. The most straight forward would be to mask in an area using some from of clipping mask. That is what I've done with the UPR below. Take a look at the Mapping Tab for each of the clipping layers and the "Rocks" layer. Note that because you are overlaying your results on your "Rocks" layer, I have to also mask in two areas there. If you look closely you will see the circles. This is less than idea. If I knew where you were going with this image, I might be able to suggest a different approach.

Hi Don, I've added a couple of layers at the top of your layer stack that I hope will give you a good idea how to use this technique. I call it "masking the mask". It's pretty much the same as Janet and Rob showed. I just made bigger changes to illustrate some more.

The layer "Whiteground" is masked by your original mask except I added Deluxe Clipping with the Solid Color left opaque which has the effect that the upper shapes are no longer masked out and so the solid white shows where they are/were. I left the Clipping Region set to "Inside" so that it would only affect the upper set of shapes that have already been isolated by your settings in the opacity band of its gradient.

The other example is the opposite. I inverted the opacity of your mask layer to make a reverse mask and used the same Deluxe Clipping except this time with "Outside" selected as the Clipping Region and I pulled the clipping area Solid Color transparent. That made all of the area that wasn't the top set of shapes transparent and hence they are masked out of the layer and this time only the UPPER set of shapes is visible as solid black - the "Blackground" layer.

This is a really good technique to get a handle for those times when you just can't seem to figure out a mask to take out some small but not insignificant to you area or shape from a layer. Or how to have ONLY that little bit showing or maybe having its own separate texture masked onto it. It helps to kind of think "digitally" when you use this technique to figure out whether to have the Clipping Region be "Outside" or "Inside" and whether the Solid Color needs to be opaque or transparent.

This example is sort of a gross/large example and I'm sure you can take this tip and see how it could apply if you selected a much smaller area than I did.

You cannot directly manipulate the handles. The handles show the control points used to define the clipping area. If the image is not too busy, you will see numbers in the control points that will map to the parameters. The easiest way to use this formula for general clipping is to make sure 'Screen-Relative Coordinates' is turned off and use the eye dropper tool when entering coordinates.

Briefly:

1. Use the Uber Clipping in dmj5.ulb, plugged into either the Transformation Skeleton from dmj5.uxf or the Generic Transform in standard.uxf. Uber Clipping supports \ClipShape objects and has more flexibility. However, some of the clipping shapes available in the older formulas haven't been converted to the new format yet.

2. If Uber Clipping doesn't have what you want, try Deluxe Clipping in dmj3.uxf. It is much, much better than the Clipping in dmj.uxf.

3. Both of these have "handles" that are visual representations of where you've placed the control points that affect the clipping shape. Different shapes--and different methods for selecting that shape--will require different control points. For example, the circle shape lets you set the circle by giving either the center and an edge, two opposite edge points, or three points on the circle; the control points that appear will correspond to the method you select. Right-click in the number field for the control point you want to change, then use the Eyedropper to select the new location right on your fractal. This is the easiest way to visually place control points.

4. Screen-relative mode is intended for precision placement of control points and manual data entry. With screen-relative mode, (0,0) is the lower-left corner and (1,1) is the upper-right corner. (0.5,0) would be the middle of the bottom edge. S-R is a special mode that you probably do not want most of the time (but when you do need it, it's great).

5. The default selection method for Rectangle in Deluxe Clipping is "fixed angle". This means that you explicitly set the angle of the rectangle, and the transform will make the edge pass through whatever point you select. Otherwise, when you select edges, the transform assumes the point you choose is the middle of that edge, and rotates the rectangle accordingly. Different methods suit different circumstances.

Janet has an entire section in her classes on using Deluxe Clipping, which makes sense since it was written at her request.

Hi Maddy Most of the time I use the clippings in this way: new layer to use the clippings as a mask, only one clipping in a layer. Block ALL level to non-editable ( the magnifier with the + sign), now drag and skew and stretch along, till you have blocked the unwanted area, perhaps you have to add another layer to block all out. When finished don't forget to make the other layers editable again. Hope it helps and I expressed myself clear enough....

You might find Blob Clipping in dmj.uxf useful for clean up jobs like this Maddy, I certainly use it a lot to remove unwanted bits and pieces, so much so that I have defined it as a preset. It's useful because you can often use just one clipping to clean up to 8 different areas.  :)

Depending on zoom factor it can sometimes be unclear where the clipping circle is when you first load it (you may see nothing or the whole image may be overlaid with the clip colour because the circle is so big) - just use the eyedropper to define the centre of the desired circle area (the Point 1 centre param) then adjust the "Strength", which is the diameter of the circle - the initial value is .001, I often need to add a few zeros to make a smaller blob that I can see. Other Points can then be added to include adjacent areas or to define other spots elsewhere on the image. The Threshold parameter determines how far the blobs merge and join together - large, irregular areas can be created or you can stick to very definite circles, your choice.
