3D Texture

Is this the look you're going for? This is an image I did last year when I was in my "rock" phase. I like to use SFMB II with Noise function set to Soft Octogons and mode set to Convolution. I then distort with Turbulence mapping.

I have been working on getting a "3D texture feel" on some of my fractals, and I believe I got close with this one. I have used RKB's simple traps enhanced to do it, but could not make the texture work with the popcorn or gnarl functions. I guess my questions really are:

1. Is there a set of guidelines one should follow in order to get similar effects on images?

I find the most useful textures are created greyscale. In general, they are best applied using overlay or multiply merge modes.

2. Are there specific formulas--maybe more suitable to the purpose than RKB's ones--to get this effect?

I took a quick look through my textures. The following coloring formulas appear multiple times:

fBm Popcorn Trap
MMF3 Alternate fBm
S.F.B.M. II
Fractional Brownian Motion
M Fractional Brownian Motion +
3D SFBM

In addition I found 'perlin noise 3D' mapping formula being applied to fractal images in a number of the textures.
